Standards

CHEM understands the value of standards and will continue to participate in the preparation of European harmonised standards as well as developing and promoting its own industry standards.

Standards, whether international, European, national or accepted industry standards, provide essential information and guidance for the design of many types of industrial machinery including methods for risk analysis.

It should be noted that standards do not have a legal status but full compliance with a recognised standard based on a particular statute will generally presume full compliance with that statute.

Over the years CHEM has produced a number of standards for waste equipment which have been accepted throughout the industry. CHEM standards have set down dimensional information for the correct matching of various types of waste container to the equipment required to handle them. Click on Literature for more information.

As a consequence of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations the following series of European harmonised standards have been drafted under the general heading of Refuse collection vehicles and associated lifting devices – General requirements and safety requirements:

  • BS EN 1501-Part 1: 1998 Rear loaded refuse collection vehicles
  • BS EN 1501-Part 2: 2005 Side loaded refuse collection vehicles
  • pr EN 1501- Part 3 Front loaded refuse collection vehicles (not yet published)
  • pr EN 1501- Part 4 Noise test code for refuse collection vehicles (not yet published)
  • pr EN 1501- Part 5 Lifting devices for refuse collection vehicles (not yet published)
