A new standard for stationary waste containers up to 5000 litre capacity, BS EN13071:2008 has been published in two parts. Part 1 deals with General Requirements and Part 2 deals with additional requirements for underground and partly underground systems.

Part 1 describes in detail the general requirements of the design of the container to ensure that it is safe to use and specifies general dimensions and mass. It goes on to set down  test procedures for empty and full containers and lists the information to be supplied by the manufacturer in the form of a data sheet and also attached to the container.

In addition to the general requirements given in Part 1, Part 2 specifies the design details for containers housed underground or partly underground. It also highlights safety requirements for these types of container with particular reference to the hole into which the container is placed, the pedestrian platform, safety floor and safety barrier. In addition to the test procedure given in Part 1 there are additional procedures detailed for these containers.
